Health Matters Corner: Rest, Reset & Replenish
August often brings a natural change of pace. Vacations are winding down, summer schedules begin to shift, and before long, the busyness of fall will be upon us. This quieter season offers us an opportunity to consider something that is important to both our physical health and our spiritual well-being: rest.
Throughout Scripture, we are reminded that rest has a place in the rhythm God established for our lives. Even Jesus recognized the need to step away from the demands of ministry. After His disciples had been busy serving, teaching, and caring for others, Jesus told them: “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while.” — Mark 6:31
What a powerful reminder for us today. There will always be something else to do, someone who needs us, or another responsibility demanding our attention. Yet caring for ourselves allows us to continue caring for the people and purposes God has entrusted to us.
This August, the Health Matters Ministry encourages you to Rest, Reset & Replenish.
REST
Give your body and mind permission to slow down. Adequate sleep, quiet moments, and time away from constant activity are important parts of caring for the bodies God has given us. Rest does not mean that we are unproductive or lazy. Sometimes rest is simply recognizing that we cannot continually pour from an empty vessel.
RESET
Use this season to pause and prayerfully examine your daily rhythms. What has been consuming your time and energy? Are there habits that need to change? Are you carrying responsibilities God never intended for you to carry alone?
A reset does not always require a major life change. It may mean establishing healthier boundaries, returning to a neglected routine, spending more time in prayer, or simply learning to say “not right now” when your body and spirit need rest.
REPLENISH
Rest creates space for replenishment. Nourish your body with healthy foods, plenty of water, movement, and adequate sleep—but remember to replenish your spirit as well.
Spend time in God's Word. Pray. Enjoy the people you love. Sit quietly in God's presence. Take a walk and appreciate His creation. Laugh. Worship. Do something that brings you joy.
Just as our bodies need nourishment, our spirits need to be continually filled.
Rest Is Part of the Journey
Sometimes we become so focused on what needs to be done that we forget God never asked us to accomplish everything in our own strength. There are moments when faith means moving forward, and there are also moments when faith means trusting God enough to be still.
Rest is not quitting.
Rest is not weakness.
And rest is not wasted time.
Rest can be preparation for what God has next.
As we prepare for another busy season, let August be an opportunity to slow down and listen to your body, to your spirit, and most importantly, to God.
Rest your body. Reset your priorities. Replenish your spirit.
Because caring for your health is also part of faithfully caring for the life God has entrusted to you.
Your Health Matters. Take Care of You.
